Z Wing Caddis Recipe

Hook: TMC 2487 #12-18

Bead: Copper

Thread: Black 8.0


Shellback: Turkey Tail Slips

Rib: Chartreuse 8/0 Thread

Abdomen: Caddis Green Dubbing


Wings: Olive Zelon

Thorax: Chartreuse Antron Dubbing




Head: Peacock Herl

Z Wing Caddis Step-by-Steps:

Tying The Z Wing Caddis

Tying The Z Wing Caddis Step 1 of 13

Place the bead on the hook start the thread and wrap back to the bend. Return the thread to the starting point.

Tying The Z Wing Caddis Step 2 of 13

Tie in the tip of one turkey tail slip at the midpoint on the shank.

Tie the second slip in by the tip right on top of the first.

Wrap back over both slips to the bend of the hook.

Return the thread to the starting point and tie in a piece of the chartreuse ribbing thread. Wrap back over the ribbing to the bend.

Dub a tapered abdomen with the caddis green dubbing. Leave some space between the front of the abdomen and the bead.

Pull both slips forward over the abdomen and tie them down at the front of the body.

Spiral wrap the ribbing over the shellback and abdomen to the front. Tie off the rib and clip the excess rib as well as the butt ends of the turkey slips.

Tie a small clump of zelon in on the far side of the shank at the front of the body.

Fold the other end of the zelon back along the near side and tie it in place with a couple wraps of thread.

Dub a narrow collar with the chartreuse dubbing at the front of the body.

Tie in a few strands of peacock just behind the bead.

Wrap the peacock three turns up to the back of the bead and tie it off. Clip the excess and whip finish and trim the thread.
