Several companies sell customizable lengths of T material you can cut yourself to get just the right length to match the depth and speed of water you're fishing, and also to match your tackle. RIO's InTouch RIO Level T, for instance, comes in lengths of 30 feet ($30, rioproducts.com) with loops on both ends, so you can cut it into a 10-foot and a 20-foot tip, and use the existing loops to connect to your fly line. But if you want to loop on a short leader butt section, or if you want to cut the 30-foot line into more than three sections, you might want to use Zack Dalton's slick method for welding your own loops onto the fly line. They are strong, smooth, and professional-looking, just as though they came that way from the factory. All you need is some shrink tubing and a heat gun available at any home improvement store like Lowe's or Home Depot.
