The Herb Miller Scholarship for Diversity

The Herb Miller Scholarship for Diversity

We need more young people to become fly fishers. This is the future generation of legislators, conservationists, scientists, and volunteers who will someday be the caretakers of our rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans. As Herb Miller points out in his story “The Color of Fly Fishing,” young people today are more likely than ever to be from racially diverse backgrounds. That’s why The Fly Shop, Fly Fisherman, Redington, and RIO Products have partnered to create the Herb Miller Scholarship for Diversity.

The scholarship will go annually to a boy or girl aged 10 to 15 years, and will include full enrollment in The Fly Shop’s five-day, four-night FishCamp in Northern California. The scholarship will also include the cost of transportation (up to $900 maximum travel expenses). All fishing gear, including waders, rod, reel, and lines will be provided. The child should be of African American, Indigenous, Latino, or other minority background.

We need your help to find the right teen or preteen for this opportunity. Please send your nominations via email to tightlines@flyfisherman.com along with a full explanation of why you think your candidate would benefit from a weeklong summer camp located in the shadows of Mount Shasta at a private ranch with streams and lakes teeming with trout. With your help, we can share the joy of fly fishing with kids who might otherwise not have that opportunity.
