Airflo SuperFlo

Airflo SuperFlo

Airflo has three new SuperFlo lines that are specifically designed for U.S. trout anglers. The lines are all 90 feet long with welded loops on both ends, with the line make and weight printed right on the welded portion of the tip. That’s one way these Airflo lines are a little different: Most premium fly lines have a printed ID on the line, but sometimes you have to pull line off the reel and search a little to find it. These line IDs are right up front on the welded loop, which is a little shorter and slimmer than other welded loops you might be used to. The lines are all on Airflo’s braided polyester low-stretch Power Core, and the coating is made from layered thermoplastic polyurethane.

The three new tapers should cover 99.9% of trout fishing situations in North America: the Power Taper (purple running line, bright orange head), Tactical (gray/olive), and Universal (fluorescent green/tan).

The Universal has a 39-foot head, with a complex compound rear taper that will help you make roll casts and crisp mends. It’s a half size heavy to load multipurpose trout rods like the Scott Centric perfectly for the largest window of ranges.

The Power Taper has a 37-foot head with a shorter front taper and a rear taper that narrows more dramatically so more of the weight is toward the front for shooting and for turning over large flies powerfully. It’s almost a full line size heavy.

Both lines are available in line weights 3 through 9, and both have a 12-foot “haul zone” of larger-diameter running line behind the head to make handling the line a little more tactile.

The SuperFlo Tactical (for line weights 2 through 6) is right on the AFFTA line weight standard. It has a long, 20-foot front taper—so you’d use this line for smaller trout flies, and in situations where you’d want to use longer leaders to create as little splash as possible. The head is 46 feet, which gives you enormous range for lifting and mending your line and controlling the drift of your fly after it lands. $100 | airflousa.com
