Darwin’s theory of evolution states (in part) that an individual’s traits can be inherited by its progeny, and that the struggle for existence allows only those with favorable traits to survive. The newest reel from Ross adheres to this principle by inheriting a hybrid stacked drag system spawned from its LTX and Animas ancestors. Meant to be the most robust and versatile reel in the Ross product line, the Evolution FS (fresh/salt) comes in sizes 4/5, 5/6, 7/8, and 9/10 to tackle a wide variety of fish in lakes, rivers, flats, and inshore estuaries. It has a mountains-meets-ocean scene engraved on the frame.
It has a semi-caged frame to provide extra strength in a lightweight package, and the design ensures the line or leader cannot slip down between the spool and the frame. Spey fishing with thin running line or Euro nymphing with long, thin leaders is not a problem.
The slightly rounded and knurled drag knob is easy to find and crank, but doesn’t catch loops of line. Like the Ross Evolution R Salt , it has a canvas Micarta handle that stays grippy when wet.
The large-arbor, high-capacity spool is designed to carry all the backing you need. The 9/10 takes a 10-weight floating line and 375 yards of 50-pound Spectra backing. Available in matte black or matte platinum.
