Grundéns Announces New Boundary Wader Collection

$600 | grundens.com

About 100 years ago in the small fishing village of Grundsund, Sweden, Carl A. Grundén began producing waterproof oilskins to protect North Sea fishermen from the hostile weather often encountered while fishing for salmon, cod, and pollock. Generations later, with corporate headquarters in Poulsbo, Washington, Grundéns became the hardworking outerwear of choice for commercial fishermen everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere, from the Grand Banks of Newfoundland to Alaska’s Bering Sea.

Now Grundéns is stepping boldly into the realm of catch-and-release fly fishing with its new Boundary Waders ($600) engineered with Gore-Tex 4-layer fabric up to the waist for durability, and 3-layer Gore-Tex in the upper for maximum breathability. The “fused contour” suspension system is inspired by modern climbing harnesses that are strong, light, and comfortable even when carrying heavy loads.

The anatomically shaped booties have two layers of Yamamoto Titanium Alpha alloy sandwiched inside and outside of the neoprene to reflect heat back toward your feet. According to Grundéns, it increases heat retention by up to 40%. We haven’t had a chance to test this technology in extremely cold weather (yet) but it’s a new potential solution to the very old problem of numb feet in stockingfoot waders. Double-weave Schoeller gravel guards stay secure around your ankles without the need for hooks.

There’s a docking station for tools like a zinger or clamps, and a large zippered outside pocket with a reach-through, fleece-lined handwarmer pocket underneath in both the men’s (13 sizes) and the women’s (11 sizes) versions. There is also a men’s zippered version ($900).

Grundéns also released the Boundary Wading Boot ($250), which is designed to work with the Boundary Wader as a system. The boots sport Vibram soles, waterproof leather construction, and are compatible with the Grundéns HEXAGRIP™ cleat and stud system.
