What happened to the SF Main library? ›

The old main library, which was damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, was rebuilt as the new Asian Art Museum. At over 376,000 square feet (34,900 m²) and with six floors above ground and one below, the new library is more than twice as big as the building it replaced.

Eating food and consuming beverages from an open container is prohibited, except in designated areas. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Soliciting money, donations or signatures. Media or commercial photography or filming, without prior permission from Library Administration.

USF Alumni and Visitors unaffiliated with USF may purchase a Special Library Card with Building Access and/or Borrowing Privileges.

During 24/5 hours of operation, all patrons who enter, or those remaining in the library from 8:45pm to 7:30am, Sunday through Thursday, must be currently enrolled students, faculty or staff and they must have a valid USF ID in their possession.

The Penn Libraries welcome visitors whose research requires use of our collections. Visitors may enter many of Penn's Libraries on weekdays without making prior arrangements. Presentation of a current, valid government or school-issued photo I.D. that contains an expiration date is required.

Destruction by the Mongol army

Along with all other libraries in Baghdad, the House of Wisdom was destroyed by Hulagu's army during the Siege of Baghdad. The books from Baghdad's libraries were thrown into the Tigris River in such quantities that the river was said to have run black with the ink from their pages.

The Morgan Library was renamed the Morgan Library & Museum after the completion of a major expansion in 2006. Further renovations were completed in 2010 and 2022.
