Pescador on the Fly El Jefe Wild Outfit

Pescador on the Fly El Jefe Wild Outfit
$500 | pescadoronthefly.com

Interested in having a bluegill take you into your backing? Pescador on the Fly, manufacturers of travel and backpacking fly rods and reels, has produced a limited run of “small water combos”–extremely lightweight 0 to 2-weight rod and reel outfits. These four-piece specialty rods range from 6-foot-6 to 7-foot-6 and were designed for targeting small yet scrappy fish in the smallest waters.

Whether casting for 6-inch cutthroat on overgrown mountain creeks, stunted brookies in backcountry ponds, or dock fishing for sunnies, these fast rods are a hoot. The petite reel has a sharp finish and reliable click drag. If you plan on throwing anything larger than a mayfly dry or Pheasant Tail, or casting in the wind, you might consider overlining it to get some extra oomph. And God help you if that holdover 16-incher grabs your fly…

Patagonia Swiftcurrent Wading Jacket

Studio photo of Patagonia's Swift Current Wading Jacket
$399 | patagonia.com

As we were recently reminded with its founder and owner Yvon Chouinard basically donating the company to causes that defend the environment, Patagonia is constantly at the forefront of saving our planet and rivers and streams. So it’s no surprise to see that the Swift Current Wading Jacket was designed to repurpose nylon made from reclaimed fishing nets–a material called Bureo’s NetPlus®. The 4-layer, waterproof/breathable H2No® Performance Standard shell is free of perfluorinated chemicals (which can cause health issues) and made of 100% recycled nylon. And like much of Patagonia's line, it's Fair Trade Certified™ sewn.

The Swiftcurrent Wading Jacket was engineered to cast freely, eliminate line snag and keep water where it belongs—in the river.

Support the environment and keep your angling loved ones dry with this sharp new jacket. Available in six sizes and two colors.

Orvis Wide Mouth Guide Net

Studio photo of Orvis's Wide Mouth Guide Net
$198 | orvis.com

Orvis Wide Mouth Guide Nets use simple geometry to provide a net with maximum scooping size, so landing fish is easier. Once you’ve got the fish in the net, you’ll find that the deep, knotless, rubberized, barrel-shaped bag with a flat bottom doesn’t bend the fish into a U-shape, and it allows plenty of space for you to get in there and remove the hook while the fish rests in the water in a neutral position. The net is made from a carbon composite that is tougher and lighter than wood, and is the right size to use as a wading staff.

Simms Women's Exstream Hooded Jacket

Studio photo of Simms's W's Exstream Hooded Jacket
$300 | simmsfishing.com

This cold-weather jacket was designed to wear under waders but works and looks great off the water as well. Its low-profile and compressible, but was also built with what Simms calls "pre-baffled stitchless construction." Which is to say that there is no thread that could break down from under-wader abrasion. It was built to last.

It has two handwarmer pockets a zippered chest pocket, a fully insulated hood and the insulation on the cuffs extends to the end of the sleeve. For a flattering fit, the jacket features a shaped waist and a scalloped bottomhem.

Headwaters by Dylan Tomine

Headwaters: The Adventures, Obsession, and Evolution of a Fly Fisherman (Patagonia, 2022) is a collection of essays and stories written over the lifetime of impassioned angler, former fly-fishing guide, and current writer, father, and conservation advocate Dylan Tomine, who uses his platform to spread information in an effort to save wild steelhead and salmon. Headwaters could be looked at as a book of adventure as the author takes us to Russia, Patagonia, Christmas Island, Japan, Cuba, British Columbia, and other locations with witty, funny, and honest prose that allows readers to clearly feel the pelting winds of South America and the anxiety of travel through the Russian landscape. Hardcover/e-book, 256 pages, ISBN 9781952338076. $28 | patagonia.com

Casting Onward by Steve Ramirez

In Casting Onward: Fishing Adventures in Search of America’s Native Gamefish (Lyons Press, 2022), you might expect author Steve Ramirez to grab a fly rod and put the world behind him. But Ramirez is not that guy, and this is not that book. He recognizes, in this eloquent guide to the healing power of fly fishing, that if we are going to get out of this mess—personal, societal or planetary—we need each other. He does indeed go fishing to heal. But he does so by seeking out others. Hardcover/e-book, 280 pages, ISBN 9781493062294. $28 | lyonspress.com

Reading the Water by Mark Hume

Hardcover/e-book/audiobook, 288 pages, ISBN 9781771645690. $25 | greystonebooks.com

Dry Fly Strategies by Paul Weamer

Despite the “90-percent rule” (that 90 percent of fly-caught fish are hooked under the water's surface), most anglers relish any opportunity to cast dry flies, especially on those magical occasions when all the trout in the river are looking up and gorging on recently hatched aquatic insects or windblown terrestrials. Enter Paul Weamer, longtime Fly Fisherman contributing editor, author, fly-fishing guide, and expert on aquatic entomology. His book Dry Fly Strategies (Stackpole Books, 2021) serves as both an excellent primer for those new to fishing drys, and a great leap forward for anglers who already have experience in the dry-fly game. Hardcover/e-book, 192 pages, ISBN 9780811739535. $30 | stackpolebooks.com

Perfecting the Cast by Ed Jaworowski

Ed Jaworowski’s large-format (8½ x 11 inches, printed on heavy, glossy paper and copiously illustrated with hundreds of high-quality color photographs and diagrams) book, Perfecting the Cast; Adapting Casting Principles for Any Fly-Fishing Situation (Stackpole Books, 2021), is different from many other instructional fly-casting volumes you may have read. The author’s focus is not so much on casting per se as on fishing—or, more precisely, on developing and improving your casting skills for the purpose of presenting flies to the fish you’re trying to catch. Jaworowski maintains that the casting principles he advocates apply to all fishing situations, whether you’re stalking a burbling backcountry stream in search of native brook trout or casting long distances from a boat’s casting platform on a tropical flat, hoping to deceive a bonefish, tarpon, or permit. Hardcover/e-book, 224 pages, ISBN 9780811739719. $40 | stackpolebooks.com

Abel Nippers

Studio photo of Abel Nippers
$250 | abelreels.com

If your recipient is the type of person who enjoys a quality-crafted, designed, and made-in-the-U.S. tool, they'll pick up these nippers, feel their heft, run their thumb and forefinger over the smooth faceplate and grooved recesses, and won’t want to put them down. When the jaws are pinched together, the hardened 440C steel blades meet with exact precision. The blades are replaceable, and can be sharpened at home. They melt through any monofilament or multifilament like a light saber, and then “spring” back open, without any springs at all. The jaws float open because of opposing nickel-plated neodymium magnets—two of them on each side of the nippers. While you may choose to clip the nippers to your own lanyard or zinger, Abel Nippers come on their own adjustable cord coated with layers of thermoplastic polyurethane.

Nick Mayer Art – Hand-Signed Redfish Print

Studio photo of Nick Mayer Art Redfish Print
$89 | nickmayerart.com

A common trait amongst fly fishermen is their appreciation for the beauty and colors of the fish we catch. Since most of us release our fish, often this marveling at our catch is rushed into a few seconds. Nick Mayer’s hand-signed prints capture the intricacies and unique features of your favorite gamefish and allow you to appreciate them for as long as you like.

Mayer holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in Marine Biology from Brown University and did an exchange program at the Duke University Marine Lab, and has worked seasonal research jobs for Alaska Fish & Game on Kodiak Island, Oregon Fish & Wildlife, Caribbean Conservation Corps in Costa Rica, and SeaCamp in the Florida Keys. He knows these fish and it shows.
